Services at St John’s

At St John’s the main service is the Mass. In the Mass we continue Jesus’ instruction given to his disciples the night of his last supper and betrayal, ‘do this in remembrance of me’. The Mass is the main act of Christian worship. Within it we come asking God for forgiveness, we listen to the scriptures, we pray for the world, and we take bread and wine and in offering it to God it becomes the body and blood of Christ.

As a church firmly in the catholic tradition of the Church of England we are fortunate to have a daily Mass. If you have never been, are nervous, or simply have no idea what to expect please don’t worry. Simply come along and watch what other people do! You would be very welcome

Weekday Masses

At St John’s there is almost always a Mass every day. The normal times are below but can change if funerals, school services mean they need to be moved. It is normally worth checking the pew sheet for the week which will contain the details for that particular week.

Monday 9.30am

Tuesday 9.30am

Wednesday 7pm

Thursday 9.30am

Friday 10am

Saturday 9.30am

Once a month the Saturday Mass is celebrated at 10am. This is done at the altar from Burswood, given to the Church. The ministries of the laying on of hands and anointing are offered at this Mass.

As a parish under the Guild of All Souls, prayer for the departed is a critical part of our work. A Mass of Requiem is offered every month for the souls of all who appear in our Chantry book and for any names notified to the parish priest who will always be happy to pray for them.

Sunday Mass Times

9am Low Mass

This Mass is held in one of the side chapels. It lasts about twenty-five minutes and is quieter and more contemplative than the later Mass. There are often fifteen or more people.

10am Solemn Mass

The main Mass lasts just over an hour. It involves singing supported by our choir and has a sermon. There is a Sunday Club held in the hall for children who want to go. There is normally a good congregation of a mixed age present. We are lucky at St John’s to always have teenagers, families and children at Mass and they are as welcome as anyone else.

Tea and real coffee are served after Mass in the Hall to which you are very welcome.
